"Bar des Folies Africaines," ca. 1950
Linen-backed poster

Graphically striking poster ca. 1950 advertising the sensational dancer and singer, who is shown carrying a tray of drinks dressed only in a grass skirt, while a monocled male figure and the Eiffel Tower hover behind her. The image is attributed to Paul Colin and the text of the poster reads: "Boulevard Carnot depuis 1926 / Bar des Folies Africaines / De 18h a l'Aube." Linen backed. 19 x 26 inches, attractively framed to 23 x 30 inches.

Baker was most noted as a singer, while in her early career she was a celebrated dancer. She was given the nicknames the "Black Venus" or the "Black Pearl", as well as the "Créole Goddess" in anglophone nations, while in France she has always been known in the old theatrical tradition as "La Baker."
