Hat with Veil, made for Maria Callas
Stunning hat with Veil by the Italian designer Biki, known especially as the favorite designer of La Divina. From the Estate of Maria Callas, through her longtime cook and confidante, Elena Pozzan. This spectacular item from the height of Callas's glamorous stardom was acquired by Schubertiade Music LLC at Bloomsbury Auction House in Rome, Italy (Sale: ROMA-7, 26th October 2007, lot 102) and is guaranteed to have been owned and worn by Maria Callas.
Known professionally as Biki, Bouyere was a notable Italian fashion designer and couturier of the post-war period based in Milan. The granddaughter of composer Giacomo Puccini, her clients were mainly connected to the La Scala opera, and she is chiefly known as the creator of the style for Maria Callas, whom she first met in 1951 at a dinner party organized by Wally Toscanini. Among many other pieces, Biki designed a plain black evening cape in wool crepe for Callas that she wore for the 1970 opening of the Teatro alla Scala season in Milan and the floor-length dress with silk satin collar which she wore in 1973 for the farewell concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
