Collection of Autograph Letters and Cards to Christian Dior
15 letters and cards, various sizes & formats, 1952-54
An interesting group of 15 letters and cards addressed to the important French fashion designer. 1952–1954. Included are letters from actor Jean-Louis Barrault, concerning the Jean Giradoux play Pour Lucrèce, which he created with actress Madeleine Renaud and with scenery and costumes by Cassandre and Dior (1953, some tears) and from Madeleine Renaud (1952, translated in part: "Dear Christian, we have tears in our eyes before such poetry, intelligence, and perfection! There are some [...] pieces in this collection which we would like to steal from you to quickly give them to Carnavalet [museum]! They are masterpieces! How you can and must be happy! We have made a first choice, of course, but we await your veto..."). Also included are thank-you notes from various noted figures for gifts sent by Dior, including a handkerchief (from the Duchess of Mouchy), a handkerchief (Olga de Grèce, Princess of Yugoslavia), a silk scarf (Countess Carra de Vaux-Saint-Cyr), an obelisk lipstick case (Marina de Grèce, Duchess of Kent), a scarf (Michèle Auriol), flowers (Maria-Pia de Savoie, Princess of Yugoslavia), an unspecified gift (Isabelle d'Orléans et Bragance, Countess of Paris), and several cards with holiday wishes. Some with toning and slight tears; overall fine.
