Original Drawing and Notes on a Promotional Card
Card inscribed to June Weir, May 18, 1987
Promotional card from the important French fashion designer, inscribed by Lacroix on the inner and back pages with an autograph drawing of a hat and other sketches. Lacroix has inscribed at the left to fashion historian June Weir-Baron, dating NYC, May 18, 1987. On the right, he has added two sketches for a "Christian Lacroix" logo and a sketch of a straw hat decorated with flowers and a black veil. On the back page of the card are several sketches of furniture. Light toning; overall fine. 11.75 x 8.5 inches (30 x 22 cm) opened.
Lacroix opened his own haute couture house in 1975 and began putting out ready-to-wear in 1988, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures. With his background in historical costume and clothing, Lacroix soon made headlines with his opulent, fantasy creations, including the short puffball skirt ("le pouf"), rose prints, and low décolleté necklines. He referenced widely from other styles—from fashion history (the corset and the crinoline), from folklore, and from many parts of the world—and he mixed his references in a topsy-turvy manner.
From the collection of fashion historian and journalist June Weir-Baron (1928–2015), the first woman Vice President at Fairchild Publications, a major force in her capacity as Fashion Editor and Assistant publisher of Women's Wear Daily and W. She made news as key editor at Vogue, as Executive Fashion Editor at Harper's Bazaar, deputy Style Editor for The New York Times Sunday Magazine and Contributing Editor at Mirabella.
